Workshops
Limerick Jazz Workshop was set up in November 2007 to promote participation in playing jazz in the Mid-West region. We meet on Tuesday evenings at the LIT Millenium Theatre and students are organised in ensembles under the guidance of expert teachers. Each session involves the students developing their skills by learning and performing some of the great standards in the jazz repetoire. There is a specialist class for singers that works in parallel with the instrumental ensembles.
Our classes run from 7pm to 9pm and are normally followed by a jam session at Bentley’s pub on O’Connell Street.
We regularly perform in public as part of the course in both LIT and Dolans. Our ensembles have supported performers such as Des Bishop and the Soweto Gospel Choir at the University Concert Hall, Limerick. We have also appeared on the main stage at Africa Day in City Hall.
LJW recently started a junior workshop to provide jazz education to secondary school students. Our first term was very successful, culminating in a performance as part of David McWilliams’s Leviathan political cabaret at Dolans Warehouse in May.
